    CO2 EOR: A New Perspective?

    CRIN

CO2 EOR is a promising opportunity that can increase oil production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Around the world, CO2 EOR accounts for around 500 thousand barrels of oil daily. In Canada, CO2 EOR is still in its early stages, with only a few projects in operation or under development. The potential for CO2-EOR in Canada is significant, given the vast resources, particularly heavy oil, available.

To realize this potential, several challenges need to be overcome. A successful CO2 EOR project requires at least three key ingredients: a suitable reservoir, a reliable CO2 source (both volumes and purity), and a pipeline connecting them. These elements entail significant time, effort and capital to de-risk. The technical and, more significantly, economic hurdles mean CO2 EOR needs supportive policies and incentives to encourage its adoption and scale-up.

In this panel, we will explore the current status and future prospects of CO2 EOR in Canada and beyond. We will discuss the following topics:
    • The key technical and economic hurdles associated with CO2 EOR in Canada
    • The role of incentives in enabling CO2 EOR scale-up
    • How new technologies can unlock CO2 EOR worldwide
    • The synergies with other CO2 opportunities such as carbon capture, utilization and
    storage (CCUS)

Join us for an engaging and informative discussion on how CO2 EOR could contribute to a sustainable and low-carbon energy future in Canada, under the right circumstances.
